Texas Tipsy Tours is all about planning the ideal Fredericksburg winery tour for our guests. This time around, Ashley, our fabulous operations manager, was able to get away for some R&R to Fredericksburg. She planned the perfect Fredericksburg girls trip for her and her ladies. See our ideal itinerary for a weekend getaway in Texas wine country.

Carter Creek Winery Resort & Spa

Our first step in planning our Fredericksburg weekend getaway: Where to stay? Lodging was very important to us, and Carter Creek Winery Resort and Spa checked off the must haves for us girls!  Don’t let the retirement home look on the website fool you.  This place is beautiful and has incredible views of the Hill Country.  Definitely a hidden gem and a perfect place to escape from the city!  With great landscaped property, they offer yard games, a large covered patio to enjoy live music, and the comfiest places to kick your feet and enjoy a glass of wine.  When we arrived at our villa, we were amazed how nice and spacious they were.

Each villa has a separate bedroom and living area with a fireplace and many more upgraded amenities including two complimentary wine tastings.  Carter Creek has a winery, brewery, and restaurant on site.  Being a fan of the McPherson’s family, I was happy to find they are the winemakers for this resort.  The girls and I enjoyed a bottle of the 2016 Tempranillo and a bottle of the 2017 Viognier Roussanne and relaxed under the “Big Texas Sky.”   I found this resort to be a great fit for friends, family, or a romantic weekend with your significant other.

ALTSTADT Brewery

Just outside of Fredericksburg this brewery brings a little bit of Germany to the Hill Country.  When you pull up you are immediately taken by the beautiful architecture of this building. This is an ideal attraction to add to your Fredericksburg vacations. As you walk through their castle- like doors, you are greeted by all the copper plated brew tanks behind glass windows.  It’s definitely a site to see.  A few of us ordered the Brewer’s Choice flights and they were generous sample sizes.  The menu was limited, but what we ordered was very tasty.  What goes best with a German beer?!?! A Giant Pretzel of course.  Next, we walked down a spiral staircase to a cozy basement bar called The Rathskellar. It has a very seductive feel with the most comfortable leather chairs. This was a perfect way to end our dinner and have our last beer, a German Session IPA.  There is also a tractor museum onsite, but it was closed by the time we left.  PROST!

William Chris Vineyards

Did I mention we picked the rainiest weekend to tour wineries?  Well, we did… and that leads me to our next stop, William Chris Vineyards. William Chris is one of our preferred locations for our Fredericksburg Wine Tour, and for good reason.  As we pulled in, we were surrounded by a farmhouse charm and grapevines. We were greeted by staff with umbrellas as soon as we parked.  They were so friendly and helpful making sure we got to the host stand and were taken care of.  5-star customer service the entire time.  We were then escorted again with umbrellas to the original William Chris building for our Winemaker’s tastings. I do recommend making reservations as they like to provide an educational experience lasting up to 45 minutes, and they book up quickly.  We were delighted to see the passion our tasting room ambassador showed us as she shared the William and Chris story with us. We were able to try five different wines and they were all superb, but the one we were pleased with the most was their 2018 Petit Verdot. CHEERS!

Adega Vinho– “Wine Cellar” in Portuguese

This recently featured winery in Texas Monthly is one you need to keep an eye on. Producing 100% Texas wine, I found this winery to be my absolute favorite- and again a winery that we frequently recommend to guests on our Fredericksburg wine tours. Besides amazing wine, I was most impressed by their story and the varietals they grow, all originating from Portugal. We had such a lovely tasting experience, and the gentleman that helped us was so knowledgeable along with information about the wines from co-owner, Andy Bilger.  We sat inside due to weather, but the property has a gorgeous outdoor area that would be so fun in the dryer warmer months. SALUD!

French Connection Wines

Tucked away behind the 290 Trail, we scored again at this cute boutique winery called French Connection Wines.  Luckily, we were able to sneak in without a reservation, but I highly recommend making one for the full educational experience. Before we even made it inside, the girls and I had to take obligatory selfies in front of this saying, “J’adore Wine so Much”. You can find many more photo ops throughout the winery. The featured wines at this location are mainly focused on Rhone Valley styled wines. They are 100% Texas grown and made, something winemaker Ben Calais has truly mastered.  While soaking up the beautiful Hill Country views we enjoyed a bottle of their 2019 Cotes de Hye paired with the most impressive charcuterie board. I’m still dreaming about it…  Sante’ Y’all!

Augusta Vin Winery

With breathtaking views and great wine, this premier Fredericksburg winery has it all!  The gorgeous estate has become quite popular so be sure to make a reservation and expect to spend a little extra time here.  All tastings last for an hour and are done at individual tables inside their two-story timber framed tasting room.  I did like that they offered different levels of tastings as I’m always interested in trying some reserve collections. We took a walk through their lush vineyards while sipping on their Estate Petit Syrah. This was the perfect place for our day to end as there were so many quaint spots so we could enjoy each other’s company.
