Eclectic East Austin Guide: Restaurants, Bars, Breweries & Activities
IMG_8581-1-1

East Austin is Austin’s fastest up-and-coming area full of trendy Austin bars, restaurants and breweries. It’s the perfect place for a chill date night or lady’s night- even the New York Times agrees! There are so many places to go to, my favorite thing to do is order a drink and app to share at each place instead of one large meal, so I can experience more!

Weekend nights get busy though, so I highly suggest making reservations!

East Austin Accommodations

I am always a fan of staying in AirBnB when I travel, but this time we opted for a hotel because it was right in East Sixth and it had a pool, and I was needing a few drinks and some pool vibes.

The Guild East 6th at Corazon– All the benefits of an apartment complex, complete with an easy check in and concierges available just a text away! The room was much more spacious and accommodating than a standard hotel room. It fit the eclectic Austin part!

Suerte- Upscale Mexican

Trendy Mexican restaurant combining local ingredients, Mexican cuisine and Mezcal and Tequila cocktails to die for (two votes for the Don Dario!). We ordered the Burrato, beans and salsa to start and the Suadero Tacos to share. Already dreaming of when I can go back.

Grizzelda’s- Upscale Mexican

THE place for a girl’s night. Every inch of this place is girly and cute and trendy and all the things- from their pink hues, girly wallpaper and elegant patio. Their food did not disappoint either. We visited for happy hour (great specials!) and had a Paloma and Fro-Mo and snacked on their ceviche tostada (double yum) and tostaditas. Planning my next girl’s night here!

Jacoby’s- Farm-to-Table, Southern

A truly Texas experience with ranch-to-table cuisine, from the same owners as Grizzeldas. Amazing quality and perfect for big appetites! We had the Jalapina Business (my jam!) Texas Sipper and Marfa Margarita, along with their deviled eggs and pimento cheese (a Texas girl has gotta have her pimento cheese..) This was again on our Happy Hour tour of East Austin, so I plan to be back for the full dinner experience.

Buenos Aires Cafe- Argentine

If you are feeling adventurous and looking for something unique, add a stop for Argentine cuisine. We visited for happy hour and snacked on the best empanadas I have ever had (someone challenge me- I am always up for an empanada!) and a few different sweet “postres” to share. The place for all you sweet-tooths! They also had a great Mexcal cocktail.

Still on my bucket list is their Milonga Room, a speak-easy, an intimate experience of which you must receive a special password for. We haven’t made it out there yet, but you can bet we will!

East Austin Bars

Whisler’s

Think upscale dive bar, “Rustic-chic”, unique experience serving highly crafted cocktails. A must visit for cocktails while you are in Austin, but it does get crowded on the weekends!

Kitty Cohen’s

A patio bar with 1970s hotel pool vibes: drink all the drinks and take all the pictures.

East Austin Breweries

With Austin’s 250+ breweries, Austin’s craft beer scene has been capturing interest nationwide. East Austin is home to six notable craft breweries, with new breweries popping up all the time! Each of these East Austin breweries has a unique vibe and variety of beer.. and they go down really nicely after a great dinner.

  • Hops and Grain

East Austin Food Trucks

East Side King

Must have Asian-fusion food truck. Go for the Poor Qui buns, brussel sprout salad, avo buns and fried chicken sandwich. May be the best thing you have ever tasted- especially after a night (…and day…) of drinking!

Paperboy

An East side food truck serving up simple, quality ingredients unique to Texas, and the perfect place to grab a bite and go! We ordered the Texas Hash and B.E.C, and both were great!

East Austin Brunch Spots

Hillside Farmacy

The cutest little upscale brunch spot, previously a pharmacy in the 50s and still showcasing its’ roots. Must try their Wasabi Bloody Mary + add bacon for the true Bloody Mary experience. While their brunch menu selection is small and not for big appetites, it is fresh and locally-sourced!

Counter Cafe

Your classic casual American diner, with a trendy vibrant twist. Great for all your breakfast favorites- biscuits and gravy, pancakes, benedicts and various meats & eggs plus lighter options.

East Austin Activities

While exploring East Austin, you must visit Town Lake (Lady Bird Lake). There is a great trail to walk around the lake, but my favorite way to explore the lake is via kayak or SUP. We used Live Love Paddle– they made it easy to rent a Kayak for a few hours.

Visit the cutest little plant shop, Succulent Native and buy all the things. Trust me- it’s the cutest!

My list of “East Austin To-Do’s” is forever growing. Check back for new additions and updates!
